It looks like speculation about a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor isn’t going away anytime soon, as it’s being reported that the latter has been licensed to box in California.

California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster, and McGregor’s agent, Audie Attar, have informed ESPN that McGregor has been granted a boxing license in that state. Attar reportedly declined to comment further on McGregor’s decision to secure a boxing license.

This past summer, there was rampant speculation and talk about McGregor boxing Mayweather. Both men have expressed an interest in fighting, however, McGregor cannot participate in a boxing match without the UFC’s permission.

In the aforementioned report from ESPN, Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, was quoted saying:

“The brass [from WME-IMG] who recently purchased the UFC are very smart people, and they would never — and put this in bold caps — let him step into a boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather because everyone knows what the outcome would be,” Ellerbe said. “He would get his ass beat from pillar to post.”

McGregor won the UFC’s lightweight title last month by stopping Eddie Alvarez in the second round. McGregor is expecting his first child to be born next year, and as a result, he’s not expected to fight again before May, 2017, at the earliest.
