Most people likely believed Conor McGregor was just taunting Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, when he put both his hands behind his back, but the fighter’s coach says there’s more to the story.

McGregor dominated Alvarez at the November 12th event, and finished the fighter in the second round with strikes. Recently the lightweight champ’s head coach, John Kavanagh, was a guest on “The MMA Hour”. While discussing the fact McGregor put both of his hands behind his back, Kavanagh noted the champ hurt his right hand during his fight with Nate Diaz in August. In addition, Kavanagh stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“He found that if he actually held his right hand behind his back, it kind of reminded him not to throw it as much,” said Kavanagh, who also conceded the tactic is an effective way to prompt an opponent to attack . “That’s why he started reaching back and actually grabbing his hand.

“It was almost like a mental note: take care of the right hand.”

The Irish star, who is expecting his first child, is not expected to return to the cage before May next year.
