Recently the UFC announced that Conor McGregor has vacated the featherweight title, and that Jose Aldo is once again the undisputed champ, and the Irish star’s coach isn’t pleased with how things unfolded.

Before and after McGregor won the lightweight championship at UFC 205, the fighter said he didn’t see why he should have to relinquish a belt. But, this past weekend, the UFC announced that McGregor had dropped the featherweight title so he can focus on the lightweight championship. Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis, meanwhile, will fight for the interim 145 title on December 10th, and the winner will face Aldo next year.

Well, McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, was recently a guest on Red FM in Ireland, and here is some of what he reportedly had to say about the UFC’s decision (quotes via Severe MMA):

“They felt they had to make this for a title in order for it to sell so they brought in another interim title that Jose Aldo already has and then bumped Jose Aldo up to the current undisputed champion. Which just seems ridiculous to me.”

“Conor has only been 11 months since he won that title. There have been many, many examples of fighters waiting 15 months, 18 months before defending it. He’s 11 months and they stripped him of it.”

“I thought it was very shortsighted by the UFC how they went about doing it.”

McGregor, as of this article being written, has yet to comment publicly on the situation.
