Cub Swanson has been fighting under the UFC banner now since 2011, and for the ZUFFA owned, WEC before that, but it looks like the featherweight contender could be headed to free agency.

Recently the UFC announced that Swanson will fight rising contender, Brian Ortega, at UFC Fight Night 123 on December 9th. Since then, Swanson appeared on ESPN’s Five Rounds podcast, and he reported that after failing to come to terms with the UFC on a new deal, he plans to fight out his current contract. The Ortega bout is the last on Swanson’s deal (quote via ESPN.com).

“It’s a power move. Of course I want to get paid more. The thing people don’t understand is that I’ve got to a point where I’m making good money and it’s enough to live on, but it’s not retirement money. Not even close.

“I’ve been doing this for 13 years and I’m in the prime of my career, but at some point it’s going to dip off, and I’d like to walk away before I start having really bad performances — with enough money in my account to make smart investments and do the right things. I just want that opportunity.”

The 33 year-old also relayed that he’s a “little” frustrated by the fact that Frankie Edgar has been booked for another title shot. Swanson campaigned hard for a title shot, following his win over Artem Lobov in April, but Edgar will challenge champion Max Holloway on December 2nd.
