Dana White Acknowledges Cain Velasquez Could be Stripped of Title in Early 2015

UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez

Following Cain Velasquez’s withdrawal from UFC 180 due to a knee injury, which ensured the champion won’t fight in 2014, Dana White has acknowledged that the heavyweight could be stripped of his title in early 2015.

Velasquez was scheduled to fight Fabricio Werdum on Saturday night, but after he sprained his MCL, Mark Hunt was brought in to fight Werdum for an interim title.

Velasquez hasn’t fought now since October, 2013, when he stopped Junior dos Santos in the fifth round. The 32 year-old is expected to be ready to fight again by March, 2015.

In a recent interview with UFC.com, White was asked about Velasquez, and whether the promotion might be forced to strip him of his title if he’s not ready to go in March. White stated:

“We’re headed in that direction now,” White said. “This next fight in Mexico is for the interim title. So if Cain couldn’t compete again, the winner of this fight would be seen as the champion.”

Velasquez, who underwent shoulder surgery following his win over dos Santos, fought two times in 2013.
