Dana White Argues Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor is “Good For Combat Sports”

UFC President Dana White

By FCF Staff

A lot of observers, particularly those from the boxing world, have argued that the upcoming August 26th bout between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is bad for combat sports. But, Dana White is defending the fight and the role he played in making it happen.

Critics of the fight have pointed out that it will pit a fighter in McGregor, with no pro-boxing bouts on his record, against one of the greatest boxers of all time in Mayweather. As a result, they see the fight as a money grab and a circus act.

But, while appearing on FS 1’s “Speak for Yourself” recently, White had this to say about Mayweather – McGregor (quote via MMA Fighting):

“No, of course [I didn’t expect to be involved in a boxing match]. But unlike other promoters out there who like to go around and s**t on everybody else’s fights, I think this is good for combat sports. I think this is a good fight for combat sports. Other people out there – Oscar De La Hoya – are saying that this thing will be bad for boxing. Yet he wanted to do Canelo vs. McGregor, let’s put that out there. This is great for combat sports. It’s like when Floyd and Manny had that huge fight and pulled that massive number, first of all, you look at it and you go, ‘Good for them.’ No. 2, that shows me the bar. That shows me where the bar can be set with the right fight at the right place at the right time.”

The upcoming fight will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
