After Dana White relayed on Friday that the April 7th bout between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov will be for the UFC’s undisputed lightweight championship, the question was how has Conor McGregor not therefore been stripped of the belt? Since then, however, the UFC President has clarified what McGregor must do, in order to retain the 155 title.

White made the comments about what’s on the line in the Ferguson – Nurmagomedov bout, at a press conference to promote UFC 223. In a follow up interview with TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter, White confirmed that McGregor will need to commit to fighting the winner of Ferguson – Nurmagomedov, before the April 7th bout takes place, or he will be stripped of the title.

Currently Ferguson is the UFC’s lightweight interim champion. McGregor has not defended the 155 belt since he won it in November, 2016, by stopping Eddie Alvarez.
