Dana White Says Donald Cerrone to Challenge For Lightweight Belt Next
By FCF Staff
Although Donald Cerrone did not face Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 187, in what was planned to be a title shot eliminator, it looks as though “Cowboy” has secured a championship bout.
Cerrone ended up facing John Makdessi, who had stepped in as a replacement for Nurmagomedov, after the latter re-injured his knee. Cerrone went on to stop Makdessi in the second round, and in doing so, secured his eighth straight victory.
Following the event, UFC President Dana White was asked by the promotion’s correspondent, Megan Olivi, whether Cerrone is the next contender. White responded by saying “Absolutely. “Cowboy” is definitely the contender.”
Cerrone faced reigning, lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos in 2013, and lost via unanimous decision. Dos Anjos is coming off a unanimous decision win over Anthony Pettis in March.
