Daniel Cormier could end up winning the heavyweight title at UFC 226 this summer, but it looks like the light-heavyweight champ doesn’t have any plans to defend that championship.

Recently the UFC announced that Cormier will challenge current heavyweight champ, Stipe Miocic, at the July 7th event. Since the promotion does not currently let fighters defend belts in more than one division, Cormier would need to vacate one title, if he’s indeed victorious.

While speaking to ESPN recently, however, Cormier said the following:

“It’s gonna suck [dropping back down],” Cormier said. “Every time it sucks, but it’s my weight class. I owe it to the guys in the division to go back down and fight them.”

Cormier’s plans likely won’t come as a surprise to many, since he’s also a friend and teammate of heavyweight contender, Cain Velasquez. “DC” also argued in the aforementioned interview that #1 light-heavyweight contender, Alexander Gustafsson, needs to fight in the interim, before receiving another title shot. “The Mauler” hasn’t competed since last May, when he took out Glover Teixeira.
