Daniel Cormier Shoots Down Idea of Return to Heavyweight, Challenging Stipe Miocic

Since Daniel Cormier has fought at heavyweight in the past, and due to the challenges he endures to make 205, talk about the champion moving up a weight class has been making the rounds. But, following Cormier’s dominant, stoppage win over Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220, it doesn’t sound like the star has any plans to return to heavyweight, for a possible clash with champion, Stipe Miocic.

After Cormier’s impressive victory in Boston, the decorated wrestler was asked about a possible move to heavyweight, and here’s some of what he had to say (quote via MMA Fighting):

“People have talked about that for a really long time,” Cormier said. “I did 13 fights at heavyweight and I hate cutting weight, as you guys all know. I’m the only guy who gets a rousing ovation every time he steps on the scale to make weight.”

“…He was there for my weight cut,” said Cormier, while referring to his friend and teammate, Cain Velasquez. “The dude’s never sauna’d, and he was dried up like a California raisin by the time we were done with that sauna. But he’s there. I draw inspiration for him. If he’s getting prepared to get that belt back, then I have nothing for that division. That’ll never change.”

Due to injuries, Velasquez has fought only two times since 2013, and his last bout was in July, 2016, when he stopped Travis Browne.
