Daniel Jacobs: Conor McGregor “Didn’t Know How to Handle” Floyd Mayweather’s Punches

Floyd Mayweather eventually scored the stoppage he promised, last night against Conor McGregor, but Daniel Jacobs believes the undefeated boxer should have ended the fighter earlier.

In the opening rounds of the contest, McGregor was much busier than Mayweather, and as a result, several of the rounds could have been scored for the UFC champ. One judge, Dave Moretti, awarded the first three to McGregor.

Eventually, however, Mayweather picked up the pace and began landing shots. In round ten, he prompted the stoppage with a series of punches. After the bout, the accomplished boxer Jacobs, had this to say about Mayweather’s pacing on “UFC Tonight”.

“Conor really slowed down by round five or six. Conor didn’t know how to handle the punches. I give it to the mentality that Mayweather had to give McGregor three rounds. He looked perfect after those three rounds. But I would have liked him to knock him out earlier.”

We saw Conor McGregor have some success early and I was worried,” Jacobs also said. “Conor was really landing at will. It took Floyd a while to figure him out. Conor needs the respect for taking on the best boxer of our generation. He showed he had the heart and determination to fight.”

With the win, Mayweather moved his record to 50-0. The bout was McGregor’s first pro-boxing bout.
