Demetrious Johnson’s Shoulder Surgery A Success

Demetrious Johnson

By Timothy J. Gilbert

UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson successfully underwent surgery on his injured shoulder Thursday, repairing three tears in his labrum, and marking the beginning of his journey back to the octagon.

Johnson recently reported the success of his operation to MMAFighting saying “It went well.”

He went on to describe the procedure that he went through,

“The type of surgery I had done is the labral debridement [procedure]. When the doctor got in there, he saw my shoulder was stable, which is the most important thing. Then I got a PRP [platelet-rich plasma] shot, which means my blood get puts in the joint which promotes natural healing in the joint where blood flow doesn’t go.”

The injury caused Johnson to back out of his April 13 title defense against John Moraga, set to headline The Ultimate Fighter 17 finale.

Instead of fighting for the interim belt while Johnson is still sidelined, Moraga is expected to wait until the champion returns to fight again.
