Demian Maia admits he doesn’t think he’s the best 170 pound fighter in the world, but the vaunted grappler is very confident he can win the UFC’s welterweight title.

Maia is booked to fight fellow contender Matt Brown at UFC 198 on May 14th, and the Brazilian star will be gunning for his fifth straight victory. Recently the jiu-jitsu champion and veteran fighter appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and Maia said he sees himself winning the belt in 2016. Maia also had this to say about his abilities (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“If you ask me ‘are you the best one in the welterweight division?’ I don’t think so. ‘Are you the toughest one?’ I don’t think so. Or the best striker? I don’t think so. But ‘can you win the title?’ Yes, I think so, because I’m different than the other guys that used to fight. I’m different than they normally expect. I’m feeling well, I’m feeling healthy, and I’m learning more tricks to be even more different that is gonna be harder for the guys to fight against me.”

The 38 year-old Maia is currently ranked #6 in the UFC’s welterweight division. The 35 year-old Brown is positioned in the #8 spot.

UFC 198 will take place in Curitiba, Brazil.
