Robbie Lawler’s rise to become UFC welterweight champ has been one of the sport’s most compelling stories in recent years, and his teammate Dustin Poirier says “Ruthless” has played a motivational role in his own career.

Poirier is scheduled to fight Joseph Duffy at UFC Fight Night 76 on October 24th, after scoring consecutive, stoppage wins over Carlos Diego Ferreira and Yancy Medeiros. Recently “The Diamond” spoke with UFC.com about his career and move to American Top Team, and while doing so, he stated this:

“Watching Robbie Lawler has been a big inspiration for me,” Poirier said. “He’s not only a training partner, but a personal friend of mine, and to see the success he’s achieved after going through so many ups and downs in his career has been inspiring. It’s awesome to see what is possible. It goes to show that you can’t write anybody off.

“Anything I’ve ever set my mind to or wanted to do I’ve done,” he added. “It happens somehow or someway and it’s always been that way since I was young. I’ve had success and been through struggles and adversity, but I still have my mind on becoming a world champion. And I one hundred percent believe it’s going to happen.”

UFC FN 76 will take place in Dublin, Ireland. Lawler, meanwhile, is scheduled to fight Carlos Condit at UFC 193 on November 15th. That event will be hosted by Melbourne, Australia.
