As many expected would be the case, Dustin Poirier and his team are going to appeal the fighter’s no-contest result at UFC 211.

Poirier battled Eddie Alvarez at the event on Saturday. The fight was ruled a no-contest, after the latter hit Poirier with knees to the head, while he was technically a downed opponent. Doctors determined that Poirier could not continue, and since referee Herb Dean ruled that the fouls were unintentional, a no-contest ruling was made.

But, according to a report from MMA Fighting, Poirier’s manager has confirmed they intend to appeal the ruling. The lightweight’s team believed the fight should have been ruled a disqualification. The argument being that even if Alvarez did not realize he was committing a foul, the knees were intentional.

Recently some jurisdictions have enacted new rules regarding knees to a downed opponent, whereby, placing a finger down on the mat, will not constitute a downed limb. UFC 211 took place in Dallas, Texas, however, which has not adopted the new rule set. One of the knees Alvarez threw during the fight’s final moments, appeared to be illegal under both rule sets.
