Earwood claims Extreme lightweight title


      HAYWARD, Wis. — Ben Earwood captured the vacant Extreme Challenge lightweight championship with a unanimous decision over Tom Schmitz in the headliner bout at Extreme Challenge 34, held at LCO Casino.
      Earwood, a member of the Miletich Martial Arts Center, used his wrestling skills to dominate position over Schmitz, a talented submission fighter from Minnesota Martial Arts. Earwood, now 12-2, is the first lightweight title holder since Shonie Carter gave up the belt when he competed in the UFC.
      Rick Gravesen, also from the Miletich school, captued a 4-man heavyweight tourney, while Joe Doerksen of Vancouver, British Columbia, won a 4-man middleweight event.
      The next Extreme Challenge is set for June 29 in Davenport, Iowa.

Heavyweight tourney
James Terrill (Middletown, Ohio) def. Geoff Oughton (New Castle, England), DQ for biting at 6:35.

Rick Gravesen (Bettendorf, Iowa) def. Ron Fields (Dayton, Ohio), armbar at :37.

Final: Gravesen def. Terrill, KO at :36.

Middleweight tourney
Joe Doerksen (Vancouver, British Columbia) def. Mark Jaquith, armbar in 3:54.

Lee Murray (London, England) def. Chris Albandia (Chicago, Ill.), ankle lock in 2:23.

Final: Doerksen def. Murray, armbar in 1:19.

EC lightweight championship
Ben Earwood (Bettendorf, Iowa) def. Tom Schmitz (Minneapolis, Minn.), unanimous decision in 15:00.
