Edson Barboza is widely considered to be one of the best strikers in the UFC’s lightweight division, but as he gets ready to fight Tony Ferguson, his boxing coach says his stand-up is more dangerous than ever.

Barboza transitioned into MMA having put together an impressive 25-3 record in professional kickboxing. The Brazilian fighter has also made highlight reels during his UFC run by putting away opponents with vicious kicks. In advance of his December 11th bout with Ferguson, UFC.com spoke to Barboza and and his boxing coach Mark Henry.

The latter reported the following developments in Barboza’s striking game:

“He wasn’t always comfortable with punches coming at him, but he’s turned the corner and he’s calm and cool in the pocket,” Henry said. “I’ve had more and more guys throwing at him boxing wise, more so than just Muay Thai training. He’s been slipping and dipping well. He can pull back on a punch and his opposite hand is always up now. When you throw at him now, you are going to pay. He used to back out, but now when guys throw he’s not afraid to throw back.”

Barboza (16-3) is coming off a decision win over Paul Felder in July.

The TUF 22 Finale will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada.
