Firas Zahabi Believes There’s a “50-50” Chance GSP Will Fight Again

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre

By FCF Staff

UFC President Dana White relayed not long ago that he’s confident a rematch between Georges St. Pierre and Johny Hendricks will get booked fairly soon, but according to GSP’s coach, the champ hasn’t committed to another fight yet.

St. Pierre announced after his split decision win over Hendricks at UFC 167 that he was taking some time off to deal with some personal issues. The announcement came after weeks of rumours and speculation that the welterweight may be considering retirement.

While speaking to Sportsnet’s Joe Ferraro recently, here is some of what St. Pierre’s head coach Firas Zahabi had to say about the champ’s immediate future.

“You know what? I don’t know. It’s 50-50 and I don’t think he knows either. If he ends it this way, I think it was good. He ended up with “Fight of the Night”, an incredible seesaw battle, he showed heart, he showed guts, he showed he’s a fighter. I don’t know. I honestly have no idea.”

“Right now it’s about clearing his emotions, finding out what he wants to do with life. He’s been fighting for so long, he’s been putting off his social life for so long, making a lot of sacrifices, it’s been almost seven years now as champion, he’s had 22 fights in the UFC, logged in I don’t know how many five round fights. I think he needs to settle down, settle his mind and figure out what he wants to do.”

St. Pierre (25-2) is currently riding a 12 fight win streak and has defended the welterweight title 9 times in a row.
