Before Frankie Edgar faced Yair Rodriguez this past May, everyone understood it was a pivotal fight for both, and the former lightweight champ admits he might have had a bit of chip on his shoulder heading into it.

At the time, Rodriquez was coming off a one sided victory over the legendary BJ Penn, which extended the highlight reel striker’s winning streak to eight. Due to Rodriguez’s run, many believed he would secure a title shot, if he got by Edgar at UFC 211.

Well, Edgar put his wrestling game into motion, dominated the action, and stopped the rising featherweight in round two. Recently Edgar spoke with UFC.com, following the news he’ll fight champion Max Holloway on December 2nd, and the accomplished fighter had this to say about the Rodriguez bout:

“You don’t intend to come in with a chip on your shoulder and I try not to pay attention to that stuff you hear in the background, but you can’t help but hear it, and your subconscious gets geared up to have that chip on your shoulder and I think that’s what happened,” Edgar said. “Whenever I knew I could take advantage of it, I definitely made sure I put a stamp on that one.”

“I felt like everything went perfect. I don’t think I got hit by any punches, I had to work a little to get the takedowns, but once I got them, I knew that once I got on top, I was gonna do some damage. I just wanted to pour it on and I wanted to get him out of there as quickly as possible.”

Prior to fighting Rodriguez, Edgar worked his way to a decision win over featherweight contender, Jeremy Stephens.

The December 2nd, UFC 218 will be hosted by the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
