Frankie Edgar’s Coach Argues UFC 196 Showed Why Conor McGregor Doesn’t Want to Fight Contender

Frankie Edgar has been campaigning for a fight with Conor McGregor to no avail, and the former lightweight champ’s coach believes UFC 196 demonstrated why.

McGregor took on Nate Diaz at last weekend’s event, in a bout that was contested at 170 pounds. Diaz won the thrilling fight via second round submission, Originally, McGregor was booked to fight lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at the card, but the latter had to withdraw due to a broken foot. The fight’s booking frustrated Edgar, who has been calling for a bout with the featherweight champ, since he KO’d Jose Aldo in December.

Following UFC 196, Edgar’s coach, Mark Henry, appeared on the “Sunday Morning Cornerman” show. During the interview, Henry had this to say about McGregor’s defeat (quote via Combat Press.com):

“I think from that fight we know why Conor and the UFC don’t want him to fight Frankie,” Henry said. “This guy gasses out and Frankie would just maul this kid. Frankie isn’t afraid to throw strikes and has good movement. There’s a lot of things Conor does to fighters that he wouldn’t be able to do to Frankie.”

Since the loss, McGregor has said he’ll likely return to 145 to defend the title. The promotion has yet to say who the bout will be against, but McGregor has mentioned that he’d be interested in fighting Aldo again.
