Freddie Roach Believes Extra Weight Led to Georges St-Pierre Tiring Faster at UFC 217

Now that Georges St-Pierre is the UFC’s middleweight champion, there’s been a lot of discussion as to whether the former welterweight champ will remain at 185. According to his boxing coach, Freddie Roach, however, the star would be better off dropping down in weight.

St-Pierre won the middleweight title last Saturday, by choking out Michael Bisping in round three. St-Pierre pushed the pace early on, but by round three, Bisping appeared to be the fresher of the two fighters, before he was dropped and then choked out.

On the latest “MMA Hour”, Roach had this to say about GSP’s future weight class and his performance at UFC 217 (quote via MMA Fighting):

“I think I would like to go to the lower weight division, back to the weight that he’s more comfortable with and more used to,” Roach said. “But the thing is, that might not be available at this point. We do need to work that out with the promoter. One thing about UFC, usually what they say goes. Conor McGregor wants to be the boss now, wants to be the promoter or co-promoter, from what I’ve read about him and so forth. But he does have the contract and I’m sure he has to follow it like everyone else.”

“I think it was the weight that got to him a little bit,” Roach said, while discussing the fact St-Pierre was tiring. “He’s not used to carrying that much weight. I think it did kick in a little bit quicker than usual. Again, we’ll work everything out and all get together and discuss what’s the best move next for Georges.”

St-Pierre, who was competing for the first time since 2013 on November 4th, is just the fourth fighter in UFC history to win titles in two divisions.
