During the final years of Georges St-Pierre’s run as the UFC’s welterweight champ, he was repeatedly criticized for not finishing fights, and now the star’s admitted he wasn’t pushing to stop his opponent.

St-Pierre is currently riding a 12 fight, winning streak, but before he announced he was taking a break from fighting in 2013, the Canadian had won seven straight bouts via decision.

The former champion was featured in the “Hurt Business” documentary, and during his interview, St-Pierre relayed the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“Critics said I was fighting more to win instead of finishing the fight and it’s true,” St-Pierre said. “Toward the end, I didn’t have the same anger, I didn’t have the same drive to hurt the guy and to finish it. And it’s a fact. I tried to get it back, but it is very hard and I think the best way to get it back for me is step out, because it’s more an emotion thing.”

The film was shot before St-Pierre’s recent announcement that he wants to fight again, and that his team is in talks with the UFC to facilitate his return.

St-Pierre has expressed an interest in fighting Nick Diaz, Demian Maia and current champ, Tyron Woodley.
