Gladiators Challenge Results by Josh Gross Colusa, Calif. – 2-18-01 Jerry Bohlander’s attempt at rising to the top of the mixed martial arts 199lbs. division suffered a setback Sunday night as he lost a three-round decision to Millenia Jiu-Jitsu standout, Romie Aram. Dominating position for the first two rounds, Aram opened a cut above Bohlander’s left eye with a solid punch, but couldn’t finish the Lions Den fighter. Bohlander came out strong in the third and final round, yet failed to sway the judges and fell to 1-1 in his comeback bid. Controversy engulfed the match between Jesus is Lord fighter, Kai Kamaka, and Combat Grappling’s Joe Stevenson. Referee Larry Landless stopped the fight at 2:16 of round one, after what he thought was a Kamaka tap-out. After further discussion, both Kamaka and Landless said the stoppage was a mistake because Landless mistook a problem with Kamaka’s glove for the signal of surrender. Kamaka was gracious in defeat and it appears as if a rematch could be in the works. The King of the Cage Featherweight Championship was up for grabs as Dave Valasquez faced Submission Factory fireplug, Charlie Valencia. Both fighters battled back and forth, trading submission attempts and strikes for three rounds. The best fight of the night came down to the judges’ cards and Valencia was awarded the decision, becoming KOTC Featherweight Champ. The rest of the results are as follows:

From the event’s promoter: Extreme Trials Set For April 20 In Minnesota The Extreme Challenge Trials, a series of amateur events that conclude with the Mixed Martial Arts Nationals at the end of the year, is scheduled to begin its 2001 season in Bloomington, Minn. The Trials are scheduled for April 20 at the Knights of Columbus hall. The event consists of 5 weight divisions — 150-under, 170-under, 190-under, 210-under and heavyweight. The winners of each weight division will earn berths into the Nationals. To enter the single-elimination event, call Ed Connelly at 319 650-8585. Entry fee is $25 up to April 13… it is $30 during the week of the show. |

We had a report on it, including interviews with Olympic gold medalist Greco-Roman wrestler Rulon Gardner, and star actor Billy Baldwin, himself a former wrestler and a big supporter of the world’s oldest sport. Also Kipp Kollar, president of the North American Grappling Association, discussed the Garden State Grappling Challenge, to be held Saturday, February 17, at the Central Regional Middle School in Bayville, New Jersey. And Jay Findling, wrestling commissioner for the New York City Public School Athletic League, commented on the state of wrestling in America’s largest city. Tuesday, February 20 — We open our live shows for this busy week with a report and interviews from the UFC XXX press conference held at noon today at Manhattan’s Time Out sports bar. Doug Fischer of Houseofboxing.com also joins us with his regular weekly analysis of the latest in the world of boxing, including a preview of Saturday’s Roy Jones, Jr. fight in Tampa, and whatever else comes up in the unpredictable “Sweet Science.” Dick Cole, the Boxing Administrator for the State of Texas, who also regulates all combat sports, joins us to discuss boxing, shootfighting, and the prospects for mixed martial arts in the Lone Star State. Also, Mike Carlson of the Augusta Martial Arts Academy talks with us about the Winter Wars 2001 kickboxing and mixed martial arts event this coming Saturday in Augusta, Georgia’s Fort Gordon. Wednesday, February 21 — The King of the Cage heavyweight championship will be on the line February 24 when champion Ricco Rodriguez takes on challenger Paul Buentello at the King of the Cage 7 in the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California. Today in separate interviews we speak with both Ricco and Paul. Also, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu star Matt Serra returns to the ring in a freestyle grappling fight at the Vengeance at the Vanderbilt 11 in Plainview, New York. Today Matt discusses that with us. Thursday, February 22 and Friday, February 23 — It’s live from the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City both Thursday and Friday as we preview Friday night’s UFC XXX. Expect interview with fighters and the usual array of UFC dignitaries, experts, and groupies. We also will have a prefight analysis of Saturday’s King of the Cage 7 from mixed martial arts journalist Jeff Thaler, who will attend that event and report on it on “No Holds Barred” next week.
