GLORY’s Chi Lewis Parry Shoots Down Theory That Sparring is Too Intense at AKA

Due to the various injuries some of American Kickboxing Academy’s stars have racked up in recent years, some have argued the team trains too hard, but Chi Lewis Parry is dismissing that idea.

The GLORY heavyweight has been training out of the renowned San Jose gym, for a scheduled May 13th bout with Guto Innocent. Parry, however, fractured his hand while sparring with AKA’s Daniel Cormier recently, and had to pull out of the bout. Not that long ago, Cormier was forced to withdraw from his UFC 197 fight with Jon Jones, as a result of a leg injury he incurred.

Parry recently spoke to UFC.com, and while discussing the theory that AKA spars too intensely, the striker said this:

“They do spar hardcore at AKA but we’re not trying to injure or knock each other out,” Parry said. “(Head trainer) Javier Mendez is right on top of it and if someone is struggling or hurt they are pulled out of sparring immediately and they are done for the day.

“They aren’t doing anything crazy at AKA you wouldn’t see in any top gym – I can tell you it’s not absolutely insane like the Dutch kickboxing gyms I’ve trained at. There you see full head-kick KOs and stuff like that all the time.”

Recently former UFC heavyweight champ, and AKA member, Cain Velasquez, announced he plans to spar less often moving forward. Velasquez has fought just once since 2013 due to injuries.
