IOC Announces Wrestling Shortlisted For 2020 Olympics
By FCF Staff
Wrestling hasn’t been reinstated for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games yet, but the sport took a significant step forwards that goal today in St. Petersburg, Russia. The International Olympic Committee ruled Wednesday that wrestling, alongside baseball / softball and squash, has been shortlisted for the 2020 Summer Games. In September, one of those three events will be added to the upcoming Olympics.
The wrestling and MMA community was thrown for a loop in February, when it was announced that the historic sport had been recommended for removal from the Olympics. The news immediately pushed countless competitors, fighters and fans into action, and an international movement to save wrestling was organized.
As a result of today’s decision, sports like wakeboarding, wushu, karate, roller sports, and sports climbing have been removed from the Summer Games.
