Iska/ifc Combine Efforts
Official ISKA and IFC press release:
ISKA/IFC COMBINE EFFORTS
Gainesville, FL: The ISKA today announced the merger of the sanctioning functions of the IFC with the ISKA. IFC officials will now become part of the newly formed Mixed Martial Arts division of the ISKA. Mr. Paul Smith, former Commissioner of the IFC, will become Director of the new ISKA MMA division.
"The ISKA welcomes the expertise and experience of Mr. Smith and the many fine officials that he has supervised under the IFC banner," states Cory Schafer, President of the ISKA. "They have been instrumental in the development of Mixed Martial Arts as a legitimate and highly recognized sport. Together we’ll work to continue the development of the sport and to help its incredible athletes gain the recognition and reward that they deserve."
IFC, one of the oldest and most recognized names in MMA will continue as a promotional company only, producing MMA events sanctioned by the ISKA. Since1996 their leadership has helped to shape the rules and safety regulations that currently exist for MMA competition. Paul Smith has been an advisor to the Nevada State Athletic Commission and currently serves as the MMA advisor for the California State Athletic Commission.
"Mixed Martial Arts is maturing, and it is here to stay," states Smith. "With the extraordinary growth of the sport at both the professional and amateur levels, it is important that we provide a safe and unified system of rules and requirements to guide promoters and to assist those athletic regulating bodies not familiar with the sport. The ISKA has a long and distinguished record of promoting fairness and fighter safety on a world-wide level and we look forward to coordinating our efforts through the ISKA MMA division and working hard for the future of this very exciting fighting sport."
