Some observers, fans and Dana White believe that the sparring footage of Conor McGregor that was released refutes the argument he can’t box. But, Floyd Mayweather’s uncle, Jeff, doesn’t see it that way.

White recently released footage of McGregor sparring former boxing champ, Paulie Malignaggi, and included the comment “for all the people who think (Conor McGregor) can’t box”. The footage includes a moment where Malignaggi goes to the deck, and it’s been widely debated as to whether it was a knockdown, push or both.

Recently FightHub TV caught up with Jeff Mayweather, and he offered this take on the footage (quote via Bloody Elbow):

“That’s part of the politics of boxing, it’s also part of salesman and the build up of everything,” said Mayweather, who is former boxing champ and a renowned trainer. “Realistically, by showing that much of what Conor’s doing, they actually exposed what he’s capable of. It’s worse, because he’s fighting a Paulie that’s out of shape.”

“The most important thing was the part they thought they were showing, was the fact that he got knocked down,” Mayweather relayed in another interview. “But even by adding that clip, it actually looked worse, because everything else that happened in between that looked like trash.”

McGregor and Mayweather Jr. will box on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
