Joseph Benavidez Taking His Time Towards Title Shot

Joseph Benavidez

By Michael Hatamoto

Team Alpha Male’s Joseph Benavidez is on the fast track back towards a flyweight title shot after finishing Darren Uyenoyama at UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez, though isn’t in a hurry to demand a fight.

I believe Benavidez continues to develop, and working with Duane Ludwig can only help, though would like to see him back in the championship mix after another win or two. The UFC flyweight division is a lesser known division with smaller, fast and exciting fighters – and I think it’s refreshing to hear a fighter talk about improving and working on his skills rather than grab as much attention as possible.

Benavidez already appears to be the heaviest handed striker in the flyweight division, able to use punches and kicks, his wrestling helps him keep the fight wherever he wants?

What’s next for Benavidez?

Perhaps a fight against John Moraga to see who earns a title shot against champion Demetrious Johnson, as the champion continues to heal his injured shoulder. The first fight between Benavidez and Johnson was close – Johnson won the first fight via split decision and captured the championship – but it should be an easy fight to sell to MMA fans.

Hopefully UFC fans are warming up to the lighter weight classes in the UFC, as I think it’s a lot of fun to watch the flyweight, bantamweight, and featherweight divisions.
