Josh Jauncey: Bout With Giorgio Petrosyan is Opportunity to “Smash” Lightweight, Become “Face of GLORY”

After battling Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong in June, Josh Jauncey has been signed to face another of kickboxing’s most accomplished lightweights, and the 22 year-old clearly isn’t fazed by the booking.

Recently GLORY announced that Jauncey will take on Giorgio Petrosyan, November 6th, in Monza, Italy. Petrosyan will head into the bout armed with an awe inspiring record of 79-2-2-1, and a resume that includes two, K-1 World MAX Tournament Championships.

The match-up means that Jauncey will face two of the sports top and most experienced lightweights in consecutive fights. Sitsongpeenong, who decisioned Jauncey in June to win GLORY’s lightweight contender tourney, currently carries a record of 100-28-5.

Jauncey recently appeared on Full Contact Fighter Radio, and when asked if he was surprised by the booking, the rising lightweight had this to say:

“I wasn’t that surprised because when you look at the rankings I’m number four, and he’s ranked right below me at number five,” said Jauncey. “And I found out that (Andy) Ristie wasn’t able to fight. So I was the next one there. So, I wasn’t necessarily surprised, no.”

Petrosyan hasn’t fought for GLORY since 2013, when he was KO’d by the aforementioned Ristie. Since then, the 29 year-old has won three straight. Most recently, the 29 year-old stopped Xu Yan while fighting for Hero Legends in China.

Since the upcoming bout marks Petrosyan’s GLORY return, and it because it’s against one of the promotion’s rising stars, it’s a pivotal match-up to say the least.

“You can’t really justify giving him anyone who’s not top ten,” adde Jauncey (23-5), who stopped Coulibaly Djime in the lightweight contender tourney semifinals. “That just seems ridiculous. At the same time, if they’re trying to build a young guy like me, it’s kind of a funny fight for them to give.

“But, at the same time, this is a chance for me to smash him and become the face of GLORY, and the face of the lightweight division.”

GLORY 24, meanwhile, will take place this Friday in Denver. In the main event, Joe Schilling will take on fellow middleweight contender, Jason Wilnis.
