Kenny Florian Says 8-Ounce Gloves are “Better” for Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather

By FCF Staff

A lot of people believe that the move to 8-ounce gloves has significantly boosted Conor McGregor’s chances of defeating Floyd Mayweather, but Kenny Florian doesn’t necessarily see it that way.

Both McGregor and Mayweather petitioned the Nevada Commission to allow them to wear 8-ounce gloves, instead of 10-ounce, which is the norm for fights at 154 pounds. The Commission recently approved the switch, and many have argued that the lighter gloves will benefit McGregor, on account of his punching power.

During the latest “UFC Tonight”, however, Florian had this take on the move to the lighter gloves (quote via Fox Sport 1 press release):

“I think Floyd wants to take the fight to the later rounds and with the accumulation of blows, he can get the stoppage. For Mayweather, having the smaller gloves helps him. He’s fought 46 of his fights in 8 ounce gloves. I think this is better for him.”

When asked for a prediction on the contest, the retired fighter had this to say:

“If there’s one guy who can do it, it’s Conor McGregor, with all his self-belief and being the larger guy. But I can’t go against the guy who’s 49-0, He’s faced so many guys and has so much experience. I’d love to see Conor do the impossible, but I think Floyd wins by decision.”

Mayweather – McGregor will take place tonight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
