Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Manager Says Lightweight Will Not Fight For a “Fake Belt”
By FCF Staff
UFC President Dana White recently said the promotion is considering having Tony Ferguson defend the interim lightweight title against Khabib Nurmagomedov. But, the latter’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, says they’re not interested in fighting for a “fake belt”.
White made the comments since it’s believed that McGregor may not return to the Octagon until summer. In a recent report from MMA Fighting, however, Abdelazziz is quoted saying:
“Khabib’s next fight, we’re not fighting for no damn interim belt,” Abdelaziz said. “We want the real belt, or we don’t want nothing. We appreciate everything the UFC has done for us, but it’s time for a real belt. Nobody is interested in fighting for a fake belt. Tony Ferguson has a fake belt. Nobody wants this.”
McGregor’s last UFC bout took place in November, 2016, when he stopped Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title. Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, is coming off a one sided, decision win over Edson Barboza on December 30th.
