Matt Hughes Weighs in on GSP’s Future: “You Want to Get Out? Get Out”

Georges St. Pierre

By FCF Staff

Although it’s been over half a year now since Georges St-Pierre announced he was taking a hiatus from fighting, speculation continues as to when or whether he’ll fight again.

Recently another UFC great, and former opponent, Matt Hughes, was asked to weigh-in on whether GSP should return to action. Here is some of what the former champ had to say (quote via Canada.com):

“The UFC would hate me saying this but I’m going to say it anyway,” said Hughes.  “If I was GSP, I’d probably hang them up. Here I am a guy that lost my (last) two fights and I’d love to get back in there (to finish on a win). And Georges got his hand raised the last fight.”

“So if I had to give advice, I’d say, ‘You want to get out? Get out.”

Hughes, who is the UFC’s vice-president of athlete development and government relations, went on to add that GSP has made “a lot of money”. The legend also questioned whether St-Pierre is willing to take the kind of punishment he might take, in a rematch with Johny Hendricks or in a bout with Robbie Lawler.

While citing personal reasons, GSP announced he was taking a break from fighting, after he defeated Hendricks by split decision last November. St-Pierre vacated the welterweight title, and Hendricks defeated Lawler in March to become the promotion’s new champion.

GSP and Hughes fought three times when the two were still competing, and St-Pierre took the rubber match by submitting the latter in 2007.
