Meca World Vale Tudo 8 Brings 11 Fights Tonight, With Plenty Of Nhb Icons In Brazil!

MECA World Vale Tudo 8 Brings 11 Fights Tonight, with Plenty of NHB Icons in Brazil!
By Eduardo Alonso

Tonight, Friday, May 16th, the 8th edition of MECA World Vale Tudo is finally taking place at the Palacio de Cristal in the always gorgeous and organized city of Curitiba.

Francisco Bueno vs. Aston Zappo
Bueno vs. Zappo

After a lot of expectation the newest edition for Brazil’s most important no holds barred event is coming as strong as ever, at least on paper, with 11 fights on the card! The show is scheduled to start at 9 PM Brazilian time, and will be broadcast in Brazilian Pay-Per-View on tape delay two weeks from now. Yesterday the weigh-ins and rules meeting took place at Nikko Hotel in Curitiba, and as always there were no problems regarding the rules, which are the same as in PRIDE. Some fighters like Jorge "Macaco" Patino couldn’t make in time for the weigh-ins and will have to make weight today, however all the fighters who were present at the weigh-ins didn’t have any troubles with the scale. Another interesting side note on MECA 8 is the fact that a lot of international press and guests are present at the show, due to Abu Dhabi happening on the following weekend in Sao Paulo. Expectations are high for the fights tonight, and this will be the first time ever that MECA has only two Chute Boxe team fighters competing, K-1 winner Nilson de Castro and NHB prodigy Mauricio Shogun Rua, whose opponent just changed once again and is now Angelo Antonio. Here is the official card with the final order of fights:

  • Claudionor Fontinelli vs. Petterson
  • Josenildo vs. Alessandro Leal
  • Daniel Acacio vs. Guilherme Lima
  • Allan Goes vs. Carlinhos Lima
  • Fabricio Morango vs. Vagao
  • Marcelo Dourado vs. Rafael Capoeira
  • Jorge Macaco Patino vs. Claudinho das Dores
  • Mauricio Shogun Rua vs. Angelo Antonio
  • Nilson de Castro vs. Delson "Pe de Chumbo"
  • Eugenio Tadeu vs. Marcelo Giudice
  • Francisco Bueno vs. Aston Zappo

In this 11 fights fighting card there are a lot of crucial and interesting match-ups, that can very well define the future of a lot of fighters, therefore FCF makes a quick run down of the most important bouts for you:

  • Claudionor Fontinelli vs. Peterson: Claudionor Fontinelli just got out of jail to win a fight at Bitetti Combat 2. With his win there he secured his participation at MECA 8, and this is his biggest opportunity to show he is on the right track again. He won’t lack heart, and his Muay Thai has been getting better, however cardio and Jiu-Jitsu skills may be a question. Peterson is a talented Muay Thai fighter out of Luis Alves’ camp, what will also make that an interesting bout. Peterson has also been training Jiu-Jitsu with the Brazilian Top Team, and promoters hope this will be a barnburner to open the show.
  • Allan Goes vs. Carlinhos Lima:
    Allan Goes vs. Carlinhos Lima
    Goes vs. Lima

Probably the most experienced fighter in the show, Allan Goes has fought the likes of Kazushi Sakuraba, Dan Henderson, Mark Coleman among many, many other great ones. After several backs and forths, Goes is back with the Brazilian Top Team and took MECA as a chance to re-start an international career and hopefully be back in PRIDE soon. He knows he can’t lose this one, and his takedowns and striking may be the key for a win, since his ground game is obviously way better than his opponent’s. Carlinhos Lima has been on a good streak of victories lately, defeating Alex Gaze at MECA 7 and also scoring a first round win at K-1 Brazil before dropping out due to injury. He gained weight for the fight, is confident in his striking and knows the meaning of this fight for any international career hopes.

  • Jorge Macaco Patino vs. Claudinho das Dores: Macaco is a veteran well known on the fight scene, a Jiu-Jitsu black belt with fights in the UFC, IVC and even MECA, Macaco fought some of the best and has plenty of experience. However, he needs this win badly as he was surprised by RVT fighter Gustavo Ximu in his last NHB outing. Patino has been improving his strike a lot and can’t risk a loss here, in what may define the future of his career. Claudinho das Dores is also another tough veteran, with more heart than skills maybe. Claudinho fought Ninja in MECA before, and promised the promoters he will "kick Macaco’s ass" in the fight. Its important to say that this is a personal fight, and both guys don’t like each other.
  • Mauricio Shogun Rua vs. Angelo Antonio:
Mauricio Shogun Rua vs. Angelo Antonio
    Shogun vs. Antonio

Since he debuted at the last MECA, everytime Mauricio Shogun steps in a NHB ring there will be a lot of people paying attention. The kid is just that talented. Murilo Ninja’s younger brother, Mauricio has great cardio, good ground skills and a solid Muay Thai that keeps improving everyday, also he trains a lot like his brother and his destiny can’t be anything but success. After an impressive KO in his debut, Shogun saw several opponents back down from a fight with him, and PRIDE is keeping a close eye on this fight, so wait for another showdown of the newest Chute Boxe sensation tonight, now weighing 92 and getting ready for bigger tasks. Angelo Antonio on his part has one thing to his credit, he accepted to fight a guy that few were willing to face. However, he is on for a tough task, and hopefully he will learn a lot from this experience.

  • Nilson de Castro vs. Delson Pe de Chumbo:
Nilson de Castro vs. Delson Pe de Chumbo
de Castro vs. Pe de Chumbo

Nilson de Castro is just a great Muay Thai fighter. An IVC and MECA veteran, Nilson is the only Chute Boxe fighter that ever won in K-1 and he is as tough as nails. Every time de Castro fights his opponent leaves the ring hurt, even when winning. Nilson is already 30 years old and has been deserving a shot at the UFC or PRIDE for a long time, and as always he can’t risk a loss in the process, so this fight means gold for him. Delson Pe De Chumbo is a great Jiu-Jitsu player, with a lot of heart. With one NHB win on his credit, at HEROES, Delson may not be aware in what he took himself into. He is going to face one of the toughest fighters in his weight division in the world, and he will need to keep it on the ground if he wants to win.

  • Eugenio Tadeu vs. Marcelo Giudice:
    Eugenio Tadeu vs. Marcelo Giudice
    Tadeu vs. Giudice

This fight has been on hold for a long time, and expectation is high for it in Brazil. Eugenio Tadeu is a Luta Livre legend with several fights in his record, and he is now willing to get back to the international scene. Age may be a factor, but Tadeu has been doing well in Submission Wrestling lately, so don’t count him out because he is getting old. Both guys were in the ring at MECA 7 challenging each other, and things got quite personal, so look for Eugenio to try his all. Marcelo Giudice is also a veteran that showed explosive fists back in the days Pele was beating Macaco. After training a lot of Jiu Jitsu with Ryan Gracie, Giudice has been wanting a shot at Tadeu and MECA for a long time, and seems very relaxed. He has the edge in Striking, but the question mark may be if he will have to be in his back for a long time in the fight.

Stay tuned… we’ll have the results for you soon!

KOTC "Sin City" Preview
By Keith Mills

Las Vegas, NV — Tonight King Of The Cage returns to PPV with a card holding something for everyone. For the fans of the heavy hitters there is the Unlimited belt on the line between Eric Pele and Dan Christiansen. The belt went up for grabs when the defending champion Jimmy Ambriz was stripped of it after signing a deal to fight Josh Barnett in Japan within 28 days of this signed belt defense against Pele. Now Pele faces Christiansen, said to be impressive in his fight against Dan Severn in Mexico. Given Pele’s history of having heavy hands and good knees, watch for this one to be a striking fan’s dream come true.

Vernon White defending his Light-Heavyweight title against Jeremy Horn will have repercussions in the scene for months to come as Vernon comes back after nine months off to take on Horn. Horn has been collecting titles and belts left and right on his way to get back in the limelight and is showing a new dedication, even dropping about 20 pounds and sporting abs on his return from training in Cincinnati. Both are Pride vets who haven’t lost in the past year and a half. Whoever wins this fight would probably be considered top of the heap of the Light Heavyweights fighting in the U.S. outside the UFC.

Also on this card is the rematch between Ronald Jhun and Shonie Carter for the Welterweight belt. Like the Unlimited belt, this belt was stripped from the owner when champion Romi Aram left to fight in the UFC. The first time these two met was last December in SuperBrawl where the first round went to Shonie and the second to Jhun, but a controversy arose in the third. Jhun knocked Carter down in the third round but the judges ruled the fight a draw, surprising almost everyone watching it. Now Jhun and Carter get a chance to go at it for three more rounds on pay-per-view with the belt almost secondary.

Even old school fans are represented on this card with Dan Severn fighting Cory Timmerman. With the return to the UFC of Abbott, Shamrock, and Kimo a lot of press has been generated lately about the old school fighters, possibly bringing back some of the fans who may have been staying away. Severn may be the oldest fighter still fighting at this level, but his wrestling-based strategy still holds up as evidenced by his last KOTC performance in NV. This one serves as a prelude to the next UFC fairly well.

Two other fights to keep an eye on are Joe Stevenson in his last fight at 170 against Thomas Denny and what insiders call two of the best up-and-comers at 170: Mike Guymon vs. Diego Sanchez.

The official card so far is:
Eric Pele vs. Dan Christiansen UNLIMITED
Vernon White vs. Jeremy Horn LIGHT HEAVY
Ronald Jhun vs. Shonie Carter WELTER
Dan Severn vs. Cory Timmerman UNLIMITED
Thomas Denny vs. Joe Stevenson WELTER
Art Santore vs. Joe Crilly MIDDLE
Mike Guymon vs. Diego Sanchez WELTER
Brent Stevens vs. Brian Pardoe
Bobby Gamboa vs. Dave Rivas BANTAM
