MFC 40: Gallicchio-Southern II Booked, Alvey And Birchak to Defend Titles
By FCF Staff
The Maximum Fighting Championship has announced that it’s May 9th event will feature three title fights, including a rematch between Kurt Southern and Tom Gallicchio. MFC 40 will also see bantamweight champion Anthony Birchak and middleweight champ Sam Alvey defend their belts.
Gallicchio (18-8) tapped out Southern (13-5) at MFC 39 earlier this month, but because the fighter failed to make weight, he did not become the promotion’s lightweight champion. Due to the promotion’s regulations Southern is eligible for an immediate rematch.
Birchak (11-1) laid claim to the inaugural MFC bantamweight title in October by submitting Tito Jones. The promotion has yet to determine who the Arizona fighter will battle on May 9th.
Alvey (21-5) stopped Jason South in the fifth round at MFC 38 in October to become the middleweight champion. The TUF vet’s opponent will be announced shortly.
MFC 40 will be hosted by the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, and the main card will be broadcast on AXS TV.
