Michael Chiesa Believes Conor McGregor’s Reign as LW Champ Will be Brief

Conor McGregor made history last November by becoming the first man to hold two UFC titles at once, but Michael Chiesa believes the star’s run as lightweight champ will be brief.

McGregor took out Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to secure the lightweight title, and at the time, the Irish fighter was also the featherweight champ.

The expecting father is reportedly taking some time off from fighting, but when McGregor returns, he’ll likely face the winner of the March 4th bout between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Recently Chiesa spoke with ESPN, and the surging lightweight had this to say about the reign of McGregor:

“…I mean, dude, you’re good, but you’re going up against a guy who is 24-0, multiple sambo world champion, or a guy that would be on a 10-fight win streak.”

“Conor is good, but I really don’t think he’s a true lightweight,” Chiesa furthered. “That’s what I’m saying. With the landscape of this division, I don’t see Conor ending his year as champion. And you put me in there, I’m going to drag him to the ground and beat him too. I’m a huge lightweight. I’m as big as Nate or bigger, and we saw how many problems Nate gave him.”

Chiesa is riding a three fight winning streak and isn’t currently booked for his next bout.
