Mundial Day Two7-28-00

Mundial Day Two
7-28-00

By Chris Onzuka

[Unfortunately, due to some apparent problems with telephone lines in Brazil, the transmission of the Day 1 report was lost (but the picture below of Mike in the Airport made it through)]

Mike Onzuka
We had a rough and very cold night sleeping on plyboard and a thin piece of foam. We returned to the Yacht club [the infamous ICJG, Iate Clube Jardim Guanabara] and found that our other teammates were nowhere to be found. They skipped the Yacht club and traveled back to the Airport to sleep in a hotel. Kaleo and I dropped off our belongings in our room earlier in the day and had the only key. We slept in our sweats and gis. We woke up and took a cold shower (no hot water) and had Acai (a fruit sorbet) that we covered with granola. I waited three years to taste this delicious food again. That was our breakfast, after that, we met up with Shane and Zac (our other two teammates) and went off to the Mundial.

Today was a very busy day since it was the blue and purple belts. Three out of our five member team fought today with little success. All of the three guys (Shane, purple belt, Steve, blue belt and Zac, blue belt) lost their first match. Shane by a score of 4×2, Steve 2×0, and Zac lost by an advantange. Zac continued on and entered the open weight class and was victorious by beating his opponent 4×0, but lost his second match by 3×2. All our team members did well, but it was not our day. Hopefully, tomorrow is different. Kaleo, purple belt and I will compete tomorrow.

So much for now. I’ll try again to keep everyone updated on tomorrow’s results. Wish us luck.
