Nick Diaz Reinstated on UFC 137 Card, Fighting BJ Penn

By FCF Staff

Nick Diaz will fight on October 29th, at UFC 137 after all, however, his opponent will be a former welterweight champ rather than the reigning title holder.

One day after Diaz was removed from his scheduled title fight with champion Georges St. Pierre, due to missing two press conferences this week, the UFC has announced today that Diaz will now face BJ Penn at the event.

Speaking via his official Twitter account, UFC President Dana White stated:

This is crazy but here we go again! You wanted it so you got it. Penn vs Diaz Oct 27th in Vegas

After announcing that Carlos Condit would replace Diaz in the upcoming title fight, White said he needed time to assess whether any further action would be taken against Diaz. One day later, it appears as though the promotion has decided that removing Diaz from the title shot will be the extent of his punishment.

Diaz later released a video blog which offered no explanation as to why he missed the press events, but insisted that he still wanted to fight.

Condit was originally scheduled to face Penn at the UFC 137 event, which will be hosted by the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The October 29th bout will mark Diaz’s Octagon return, as the Cesar Gracie fighter has not fought for the UFC since 2006. Since exiting from the UFC, Diaz (25-7) has gone 11-1 with 1 No Contest, a run which includes winning the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship.

  1. Daniel says:

Hey guys just wanted to comment of this. I am very much looking forward to seeing Nick fight! Truth be told I was really looking forward to seeing him fight GSP! I don’t want to vent too much because as is life you make a decision you live with the consequence, Nick decided to not attend his obligations and lost out on the belt. I just wanted to say this as a HUGE FAN, you lost my respect NICK. I can’t imagine what it is like to step in a ring, train hard daily, sacrifice so much. But I do know that when I pay good money to watch something I expect to get my fair value. Now I will no longer support Nick the way I have been as he continues to show how disrespectful he is not only towards you guys, to the organization, to his colleagues but mostly to the fans.

Besides all this love you guys, bless you all.
