Nick Ring will likely have even more home town support when he fights at the upcoming July 21st, UFC 149 card in Calgary, as the middleweight has captured mainstream headlines in Canada and beyond for helping break up a swarm attack in the city.

According to a report from the Calgary Herald, the 33 year-old Ring witnessed approximately ten people attacking and mugging a couple as he left a local Starbucks. The fighter reportedly checked with another bystander and proceeded to intervene in an effort to help the victims.

Ring told the Herald that the group, who he referred to in the report as “wannabe gangsters”, ran off as he called the police on his cell phone. Ring and another bystander apparently apprehended one of the suspects while the police detained several others.

“I did not like what I saw and I wasn’t going to stand around and watch that happen,” Ring was quoted saying at Calgary Herald.com. “It was a crime and it was completely wrong. I’m not going to let anything like that happen if I’ve got anything to say about it. Not a chance.”

The fighter also relayed that he did not believe any of the suspects had recognized him as a UFC competitor.

One of the mugging’s victim’s was reportedly sent to hospital after the attack but is not suffering from any life threatening injuries.

Ring is scheduled to fight Court McGee at the upcoming UFC 149 card.
