Opinion: Does Mark Hunt Really Stand a Chance?

Mark Hunt rose to stardom in K-1

By Michael Hatamoto

There is no doubt that Mark Hunt is a legendary combat sports fighter and will be able to retire and look back on his pro fighting days with satisfaction.

Hunt has earned himself some bonus brownie points from UFC brass, as he agreed to step in on short notice against former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos.

The fight will likely end up being a strictly standup affair and I can’t see Hunt finishing JDS during the fight.  Hunt has insane power in his hands, but I think JDS can use foot work and counter punching to control the fight if he can’t stop Hunt within three rounds.

The former K-1 champ turned MMA combatant has fought some of the biggest names in MMA and K-1 history — and while he didn’t win a number of those fights — he still stepped in there and competed at the highest level.

I know Hunt has a K-1 background – where the best kickboxers in the world used to compete – but I think JDS’ footwork and head movement will keep him away from Hunt’s power.

Hunt joined the UFC on a five-fight losing streak, then lost to Sean McCorkle in his UFC debut, but turned things around and has a four-fight win streak.

As a longtime fan, despite saying Hunt should have retired a few years ago, he is now truly shocking me.  I only can wish him the best of luck, because he’s certainly going to need it if he wants to realistically beat JDS.

JDS vs. Hunt is expected for the main card of UFC 160 in Las Vegas on May 25.
