Opinion: GSP Won’t Be Distracted By Nick Diaz Trash Talk

UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre

By Michael Hatamoto

Is Nick Diaz finally inside of Georges St. Pierre’s head?

Diaz was able to get the normally calm and quiet champion to engage during a UFC media call last week, setting up a surprisingly exciting press exchange.

Here is what GSP said during a very heated 40-minute conference call that largely focused on GSP and Diaz:

“I’ve not always been rich.  I start(ed) from the bottom.  I make myself.  I work very hard to be where  I am right now.  And as much as I know you don’t believe this because you didn’t succeed yet and maybe you will never succeed in your life because I don’t think you’re smart enough to understand that all you should do to reach that point.”

It happened again during the press conference today, when Diaz said he believes the welterweight champion is “on plenty of steroids,” surely his latest attempt to rile up GSP.

We won’t know until Saturday night if the mind games do play into the fight, but I don’t think they will have a significant impact.  I don’t expect any level of trash talk to distract GSP, as the French-Canadian champion has seen and heard it all from opponents.

GSP vs. Diaz should be an epic showdown, with Diaz looking to move forward and put pressure on the champion – GSP will likely to mix up his striking game with the threat of takedowns.  Even if Diaz is able to interrupt GSP’s mental game plan this week, I am not sure if GSP will let it bother him inside the cage.
