Opinion: Invicta FC’s Decision to Stream Entire Women’s Professional Event For Free is Good for MMA
By Michael Hatamoto
The upstart Invicta Fighting Championship women’s MMA promotion looks forward to its second event scheduled for July 28 in Kansas City, Kan.
The event will stream for free on the Invictafc.com website, and includes a color commentary staff of Mauro Ranallo, MMA fighter Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, and Strikeforce female fighter Julie Kedzie.
Invicta FC 2, which is headlined Sara McMann vs. Shayna Baszler, also includes Hitomi Akano vs. Alexis Davis.
Here is what Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp said:
“We are excited about delivering a stacked women’s fight card to a global audience for the second time in a three month span. The live stream is an excellent way of supporting Invicta FC’s mission of providing women mixed martial artists with a major platform to showcase their skills on and to support the growth of women’s MMA far and wide.”
Even offering a pay-per-view for $9.99 – an extremely low price for a live MMA event – still wouldn’t generate a lot of publicity. It’s clear Invicta FC has a long-term goal to promote women’s MMA, and offering a free event stream is a good way to build credibility.
As a fan of women’s MMA, I hope Invicta FC is able to succeed, as Strikeforce – which is a dying brand – is the biggest promotion for women’s fighters to get into the cage.
I’ll watch it!
