Opinion: Miesha Tate Doesn’t Deserve Rematch Against Ronda Rousey

Former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate competed on Saturday night, making an incredible and inspiring comeback and securing an armbar submission in round three against Julie Kedzie.

Despite a finish against Kedzie, Tate certainly was in danger and battled with all she had to pick up the win against a very game opponent.

Following the fight, here is what Tate had to say regarding a potential Rousey rematch:

“I’m not going to ask for that at that point because I don’t feel that I deserve it. I think that I need to take a couple fights and I need a better performance than that. I think the fans deserve something better, and I know that I can deliver better than that. … At this point, I don’t feel that my performance, I mean everyone is saying it was ‘Fight of the Night’ and everything and that’s great and I’m really happy it was an entertaining bout. But I personally am not happy with my performance. I definitely don’t think it was a contention worthy performance.”

Considering all of the statements made back and forth between Rousey and Tate leading up to Saturday night, it’s a shame that an immediate rematch now looks like a complete dud. It’ll be up to Tate to take another fight and try to win impressively if she wants a chance at future redemption against Rousey?

Who is next for Tate?

Whether she jumps to Invicta FC for a fight or stays in Strikeforce, the potential of Tate facing the likes of Alexis Davis, Sara McMann or Liz Carmouche are appealing. There are some fights that can be made to help promote Tate as she looks to try and head back towards the top of the division.

Tate also welcomes a coaching spot on The Ultimate Fighter opposite of Rousey, but that doesn’t seem very likely from the UFC.
