Profight Combat Show
brings NHB back to yet another Brazilian Capital, and Brazilian Top Team use their young guns to break ground!

After being banned in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, our beloved sport of No Holds Barred fighting is now accepted there once again, and this conquer debuted with yet a new event appearing in Brazil. The state of Rio Grande do Sul is one of the most important and richest states of Brazil, located in the extreme south of the country. Getting our sport back in this region is very important for all the Brazilian fighting community, and PROFIGHT COMBAT SHOW had the task of being the first show to be held there after the ban, not only in the state but in the city of Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, as well! Porto Alegre is probably Brazil’s fourth or fifth biggest city, and if the sport succeeds there it’ll most certainly open a great market for promoters and fighters.
The first step in this direction, PROFIGHT COMBAT, took place this past Saturday, May 24th, and it was promoted by MECA veteran and Brazilian Top Team athlete Luis Britto, counting with the support of friends such as Mario Sperry. Needless to say, some Brazilian Top Team young fighters carried the torch of the team in this new show, as seven NHB fights were scheduled for the Saturday night. A crowd of more than 1,000 spectators showed up to see the action live, and the show counted with famous referees such as Murilo Bustamante and Mario Sperry, as well as coverage of important Brazilian magazines such as TATAME. The action ended up consisting of six fights, cause Bitetti Combat veteran and BTT member Marcelo Alfaia ended up being forced to to withdraw moments before his fight due to stomach problems. In the ring the action satisfied the crowd, with newcomer Flavio Ferreira, student of legendary Ricardo De La Riva, showing great Jiu Jitsu skills and getting his opponent in a rear naked choke to win the fight! Bitetti Combat veteran Paulo Boiko came in for his second NHB fight and also did a good job, beating a game opponent in Alexandre Baby by judges’ decision in a tough and competitive fight.
Since the highlight of the show was the presence of Brazilian Top Team fighters, and Marcelo Alfaia couldn’t compete, the show was granted by Carlos Baruck and Fabiano Capoane. Baruck showed a solid game against a tough opponent in Jeremias, who took him to a judges’ decision but didn’t jeopardize Carlos’ win. On his part Fabiano Capoane showed why he is believe to be a fighter of a great future in the BTT camp and took quick work of Rafael Flores, controlling the action and forcing him to tap out due to knee strikes to the ribs still in the first round. The show also saw a great battle between local fighters Joao Assis and Valdir Linhares, with back and forth action until Joao got a rear naked choke to win the fight in the third and final round. In the end everything went smooth for the first NHB event in Porto Alegre since the ban took place, and now promoters are already planning the next one, in times No Holds Barred events seem to be appearing everywhere and all the time in Brazil! May the trend continue! Here are the results:

  • Jorge Velho (Union) def. Lindomar Silva (Profight) by armbar in the 1st round.
  • Joao Assis (Profight) def. Valdir Linhares by rear naked choke in the 3rd round.
  • Carlos Baruck (Brazilian Top Team) def. Jeremias "Punhos de Aço" by judges’ decision after 3 rounds
  • Flavio Ferreira (De La Riva) def. Jurandir Teixeira (Union) by rear naked choke in the 1st round.
  • Paulo Boiko (Paulo Caruso) def. Alexandre Baby (Otavio Duarte) by judges’ decision after 3 rounds
  • Fabiano Capoane (Brazilian Top Team) def. Rafael Flores (Boxing/Judo) by tap out in the 1st round

Advanced BKJ’s Jiu-Jitsu Tournament

Advanced BKJ (Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Network), presents West Virginia’s first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Submission Grappling Tournament on Saturday, August 16, 2003, at Sissonville High School in Charleston, West Virginia. This will be a very exciting weekend full of action and competition.

Since West Virginia provides a central location to many of the surrounding states that are starving for a nice format to compete in, we look for this tournament to be very successful. Interest has already been seen from many individuals in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. We look for interest to increase as the word gets out.

Pre-registration is now open and we encourage individuals to get their forms in as soon as possible. This will not only help the tournament run smoother, but will also give those who pre-register a discount. Pre-registration is just $25.00 ($30.00 to compete in everything) and it closes on August 8th.

Both Gi and No-Gi Divisions are available for Men, Women, and Teens. Beautiful trophies and awards will be presented to the winners. We also have great prizes donated by Jiu-Jitsu International (a brand new Gi of your choosing) and many other companies.

We also have a unique event called, "BKJ Rules Fighting", which will be a ‘watered-down’ form of MMA that will allow people their first taste of the MMA experience without all of the bruises associated with it. This event will allow competitors to punch and kick to the body while on the feet, punch to the body while on the ground, and be a continuous fight with no interruptions. A Gi is not required and it will be one 3-5 minute round. We look for this event to be very exciting and give individuals a new environment to test their skills even further and possibly warm up before they get into a real MMA fight.

Feel free to contact me for any additional information and/or questions.
