Raphael Assuncao Calls For Bout With Urijah Faber, Says Latter Fighting Dominick Cruz Doesn’t Make Sense
By FCF Staff
Since Dominick Cruz recaptured the bantamweight title, Urijah Faber and others have been calling for a rubber match between the two, but Raphael Assuncao isn’t on board with the idea.
Cruz narrowly got by TJ Dillashaw last Sunday with a split decision win, and in doing so, reclaimed the belt he was forced to vacate a couple of years ago. There has been considerable speculation that the UFC might book Cruz – Dillashaw II, since it was so close, but Faber is also in the mix.
Recently Assuncao spoke to UFC.com, and during the interview, he had this to say about Cruz – Faber III:
“Why does Urijah just get the next title shot?” Assuncao said. “With the fight being so close and Urijah having had a couple title shots already and having fought Cruz already maybe I’m wrong and maybe the fans do want to see it, but in my mind, I don’t think it’s a great fight for Urijah.
“What makes sense right now is maybe a rematch between (Cruz and Dillashaw) and me fighting Urijah. That’s where I see the division right now.”
Assuncao, who holds a split decision win over Dillashaw, hasn’t fought since 2014 due to injuries. The bantamweight is riding a seven fight winning streak and is ranked #4 at 135.
