After defeating Geane Herrera at UFC Fight Night 73,  and recording his third straight win, Ray Borg’s coach believes the rising flyweight will face a top ten ranked opponent next.

Borg worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Herrera on August 8th, and since then, the FIT NHB fighter has moved into the #10 spot at 125. The Albuquerque gym’s head coach, Tom Vaughn, recently appeared on Full Contact Fighter Radio, and had this to say about Borg:

“Well, I do think that. So there’s already something kind of being talked about…we’ve already said yes,” said Vaughn, when asked about whether he thinks Borg will fight a top ten ranked flyweight in his next fight. “We’re just waiting for the other person to say yes. I can tell you definitely that they’re thinking top ten opponent for Ray.”

The 22 year-old Borg took on Dustin Ortiz in his Octagon debut last April, and drew widespread praise, even though he lost by split decision to the #9 ranked fighter. Since then, Borg has gone on to defeat Shane Howell and Chris Kelades, in addition to Herrera.

“We just love having him in the UFC,” furthered Vaughn. “He’s still young and the last fight was exciting, it was a good fight, so anything that makes sense we’re willing to do. I think that once you get into the top ten it gets a little tricky, but I think that Ray has the ability to hang with anybody.”

“Not just hang; we want to win these fights,” furthered Vaughn, who is also the head coach for UFC welterweight, Tim Means. “So the fight that was talked about, we feel good about, so we’re just waiting to see if they feel good about it.”

Borg currently carries a record of 9-1 after turning professional in 2012.
