In advance of his May 29th bout with featherweight contender Jeremy Stephens, former bantamweight champ Renan Barao has acknowledged the cut to 135 pounds had become too much.

Barao has elected to move up to 145 pounds, after being stopped by now former bantamweight champ TJ Dillashaw for a second time last August. Although Barao ruled the bantamweight division for some time, the Brazilian star struggled to make the weight, and was even forced to withdraw from UFC 177 due to weight cutting issues.

Recently Barao spoke to Globo Esporte about his decision to leave the bantamweight division, and the renowned fighter said this (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):

“The weight cutting was too wearing. I was not able to recover 100%. My body felt that a lot.”

Barao – Stephens will be part of UFC FN 88, which take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
