Renan Barao to Defend Interim Bantamweight Belt Against Eddie Wineland in UFC 161 Main Event
By Timothy J. Gilbert
UFC interim bantamweight champion, Renan Barao, will put his belt on the line against former World Extreme Cagefighting champion Eddie Wineland in the UFC 161 main event.
Renan vs. Barao will headline the upcoming UFC event, set to take place at the MTS centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, according to a comment made by Dana White to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.
Barao earned the bantamweight belt after successfully stepping in when a torn ACL forced former champion, Dominick Cruz, out of his title bout with Urijah Faber.
After defeating Faber, Barao (32-1-0, 1NC), successfully defended his belt with a fourth round submission over young upstart Michael McDonald.
Immediately following the fight Wineland posted a message on Twitter begging for a match with Barao. Wineland (20-8-1) is coming off of a Fight of The Night winning knockout victory over Scott Jorgensen, and a split-decision victory over Brad Pickett.
His request was fulfilled, and he will meet Barao on June 15.
As of now, there is no date set for the possible return of the champion, Dominick Cruz.
