Report: Anderson Silva Receives One Year Suspension, Accused of “Playing Games” by NSAC Rep

Anderson Silva

Although Anderson Silva and his team have repeatedly stated he never knowingly took performance enhancing drugs, the legendary fighter has been suspended for one year, as expected.

Silva appeared in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission today, several months after the former middleweight champ tested positive for several banned substances in January. More recently, it was reported that Silva’s team planned to argue that supplements the fighter was taking prior to UFC 183, were tainted with drostanolone metabolite, an anabolic steroid.

Well, according to a report from MMA Junkie.com, the NSAC wasn’t swayed by the appeal, and Silva has been handed a one year suspension. The suspension is retroactive to January 31st, when he decisioned Nick Diaz. That result will be overturned to a non-contest. The 40 year-old fighter has also been fined $380,000.

According to the aforementioned report, NSAC commissioner Anthony Marnell relayed during the proceedings that “There’s definitely knowledge of what’s going on here, and we’re just playing games. And that’s my frustration at all this soft testimony.”

At UFC 183, Silva was competing for the first time since December, 2013, when he broke his leg while fighting champion Chris Weidman. Marnell reportedly theorized that Silva may have used some “product”as a means to recover from the injury.
