Report: Anderson Silva’s Willing to Take Step Back as “Jacare” Souza Pursues Title

Although Anderson Silva has relayed his interest in pursuing the UFC middleweight title once again, the storied fighter is apparently willing to wait in line as his teammate Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza pursues the belt.

After Silva broke his leg during his rematch with champion Chris Weidman last December, the legend said he wasn’t interested in making another title run. More recently, however, Silva has reportedly said he’s committed to securing the championship once more.

On Tuesday, Silva attended a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, and the 39 year-old fighter had this to say about “Jacare” when asked about his own title shot goals (quote via MMA Junkie.com):

“He’s been working hard for that to happen, so I’m not pretending to fight for the belt,” Silva said. “I think I need to qualify myself for the belt again. Nothing more fair than to let ‘Jacare’ do it.”

Souza has won seven straight fights and is currently ranked #2 in the UFC’s middleweight division. Most recently, the renowned grappler scored a third round, submission win over Gegard Mousasi in September.

Silva, on the other hand, is currently the #1 contender at 185.
