Report: Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney Says Immediate Rematch Between Pat Curran and Patricio Freire Not Happening
By FCF Staff
Although Bellator Featherweight Champion narrowly got by Patricio “Pitbull” Freire last night in Irvine, California, with a split decision win, the promotion will not be setting up an immediate rematch between the two fighters.
Bellator recently announced that it was introducing an immediate-championship clause, which will allow the promotion to set up title fight rematches when it sees fit. According to a report from MMA Junkie, however, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney has relayed that recent tourney winner Daniel Strauss will be the next man to challenge Curran.
Rad Martinez and Shabulat Shamhalaev are scheduled to fight on February 21st to determine the next challenger after that.
With the win over Freire Thursday, which also marked Bellator’s debut on SPIKE, Curran (18-4) has won five straight bouts.
